August 31, 1995 was a turning point in the history of Punjab and the Khalistan movement. For 3 years Chief Minister Beant Singh (“Beanta”) let loose the Punjab Police and the likes of KP Gill, Sumedh Saini and Izahar Alam to infiltrate the ranks of Sikh militant groups and commit gross human rights violations across Punjab. It was on this day that Dilawar Singh assassinated “Beanta.”

Twenty years on from this historic event, we as a nation are torn in our choice of activism. We continuously adopt language and methods that are acceptable to mainstream societies which we now call home and often shun methods and individuals that continue to abide by Gurmat sidhant and exercise their rights as sovereigns created by Guru Gobind Singh.
